On the weekend I ventured down to the mysterious island of Tasmania for the first time, hanging out for a few days in the capital city, Hobart. The city itself was great, but the constant stream of incredible landscapes just outside Hobart is where the real gold lay.
However, the decidedly less natural highlight was definitely the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA). Set up by self-made billionaire gambling genius David Walsh and housing his private collection, MONA is entirely unique, not only in regards to the pieces it contains (ranging from ancient Egyptian artifacts to an artificial digestive system) but also in the way you experience the art. All the pieces are unlabelled, with the only (often hilarious) information about the exhibits contained in a GPS enabled iPod touch which acts as your personal electronic tour guide. Add to this the incredible monolithic architecture, the adjacent brewery and winery, and the place is pretty much heaven.
So all in all, the trip was kind of amazing. I apologise if I ever doubted you Tassie, you’re alright.
